Head of Department

Today, after three and a half decades of free media practice, Nepal's information and communication ecosystem has undergone profound changes. In the 1990s, Nepal's mass media experienced euphoric moments with the restoration of civil and political rights, which consequently paved the way for introducing advanced technologies in print and broadcast media.

Since the early decades of the new millennium, the information and communication landscape has expanded rapidly with the rise of new media, including the ever-growing use of social networking sites. While journalism, in principle, is required to provide verified and edited content, today it is no longer the sole player under the broad umbrella of public communication. Nonetheless, its significance remains crucial for maintaining democratic governance in the future. However, in this evolving context, the sources of information and communication have proliferated rapidly, necessitating a broader approach to communication studies in terms of knowledge and skills.

Media studies must adapt to the changing landscape to keep pace with the times. Against this backdrop, we are committed to expanding opportunities for our graduates. Along with acquiring knowledge, skills, and ethical awareness in reporting and editing, they will be better equipped to handle public relations and advertising in this unprecedented era of artificial intelligence. Additionally, they will gain expertise in areas such as development communication, behaviour change communication, and public and strategic communication. Our focus is on preparing graduates with modern communication methods suited for a globalized world.
